The Breaking Bread, Breaking Walls idea came out of a raid outside Rising Hope UMC by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers who detained and apprehended suspected undocumented residents. The purpose of the BBBW dinners is to help break down walls, by breaking bread together. The dinners featured conversation on relevant topics and opportunity for participants to learn more about their tablemates and discuss their faith and background. The dinners are a collaboration of Rising Hope UMC, Woodlawn-Faith UMC, Ventures in Community and other faith communities along the Richmond Highway corridor. The project is being funded by the United Methodist Church Commission on Religion and Race and the Alexandria District of the United Methodist Church.
